HOBBLE DAY is a small, annual event for friends of the label to celebrate the wonderful camaraderie and important networks we’ve all helped build together through music. Each year, a different city from the last, meeting as many people as we all can! The first city chosen is Brisbane.

Much of the labels life to date has been in my home state of Victoria. But even after moving to South Australia three years ago, Queensland has always been the second strongest state for direct orders. Some of our most loyal fans and greatest friendships have forged from there, and I am continuously reminded of the passion, quality and unique perspectives of many artists in the region. It was always an ideal starting point.

Unexpectedly, Hobble Day has become the fitting final show for longtime Brisbane friends Arrows, who after 8 years are now finishing up. From Victoria (formally New South Wales) will be Jamie Hay and recent label signings Ceres, also from Victoria. Our local mates We Set Sail will be there to kick things off.

Formed in 2003 in Beverly, Massachusetts, the band has enjoyed an inexorably rise since the propulsive rhythms and ecstatic washes of their debut 2005 EP ‘You Are The Conductor.’ Channelling Pink Floyd, Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Penderecki, they tapped into a seam all their own. Expanding their ranks to a three guitar attack in 2007’s ‘The Four Trees’ they continued experimenting with their sound through classical motifs to what would become ‘Waking Season’, produced by Matt Bayles (Russian Circles, Minus the Bear, Mastodon, Minus the Bear and Mono).

Throughout, the band have build a formidable live reputation off the back of consistent touring through the Northern Hemisphere. In addition to extensive solo headline tours, a diverse range of European & US tours with God Is An Astronaut, H.I.M., Minus The Bear and Defeater, as well as a sold-out North American co-headlining run with 65daysofstatic late last year established the band’s demand as a live draw on an upward trend. Recent jaunts through Asia have missed the Australian continent until now. This March they will trek through Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide on a headline club tour.

Touring as support will be Sydney cinematic instrumental group Meniscus, who themselves are coming off the back of successful European & Australian touring in support of 2011’s War of Currents album.

Presented by The Bird’s Robe Collective, Hobbledehoy, TheMusic and RTR FM.

AUDIO: Ceres premier new track ‘Middle Names’

Our new buds from Melbourne band CERES have unveiled the first track ‘Middle Names’, from their highly anticipated debut ‘I Don’t Want To Be Anywhere But Here’ coming Autumn 2014. Check it out at the link.

Anthemic, beautifully constructed pop with a dark edge, often hitting so perfectly right to the gut. This is a new band, a new sound, whilst simultaneously feeling like an old friend: CERES.

Welcoming Ceres to Hobbledehoy + EP Reissue

Earnest alternative-rock music seems to be a contradiction from the direction popular music has strayed as of late. The need for genuine lyrics, purposeful direction and accessible melodies has been long overdue. CERES have crafted an ideological throwback to the days when music was charged with hope and contained a much-needed brand of sincerity. There could be comparisons made, but those still wouldn’t encapsulate the often subtle details that comprise this Melbourne quartet’s true sound.

Uncool, unknown, and unabashed – CERES have been slowly building momentum off-the-grid since their debut EP ‘Luck‘ was quietly self-released early 2013. After partnering with Hobbledehoy Records for their upcoming full-length, due Autumn 2014, we are proud to announce the anticipated vinyl release of the Luck EP, available to pre-order now.

Introducing: Hobbledehoy Vélo

I like to buy quality products when I can, investing now rather than cheaping out on stuff that doesn’t last. Hey, we can’t all afford to always buy the best, but when it comes to cycling wearables I’ve found all to often price doesn’t correlate with quality. Together with some bespoke manufacturers, I’ve begun a tiny side-project making the gear I want to wear and share with all our riding supporters on team hobble.

Ladies and Gentlemen, presenting Hobbledehoy vélo. A very small-run, high-quality division of exceptional riding products.

hobble-jersey-mod-460xHobbledehoy vélo – Merino Cycling Jersey

This is the beginning of the Hobble vélo range, a custom jersey made of soft, comfortable Merino wool. Designed not for racing, rather for EVERYTHING ELSE. Whether you ride city, highway or trails… this is one hard working, versatile, quality jersey. We’ve tried hard to create something we hope will become your favourite piece of cycling clothing.

Hand crafted in Sydney by ELEVEN from Woolmark Merino wool, minimalist Black/Grey design featuring a small Hobbledehoy logo on chest and sleeve. Sporting clean generous cuts for comfort and range of motion, with three rear pockets, reinforced to prevent ‘load sag’, an easy-on/easy-off full-length Swiss-made zip and elasticised sleeves and waist. Merino regulates temperature so well we use it as a base layer in Winter and on its own in Summer.

VIDEO: OWEN – Bad Blood

Mike Kinsella stumbles and weaves through a new OWEN music video for “Bad Blood” directed by Guise (Samuel Gursky and Mitchell Wojcik) where the mourners for a funeral gather in a record store. Off of his recently released album L’ami du Peuple, the song digs deep into a family’s unexposed roots with SPIN describing it as “a majestic, country-informed single”. Check out the Youtube video!

Pre-order – Bānhūs package deals inc vinyl, CDs, t-shirts

Perth’s adored post-hardcore quintet Eleventh He Reaches London will reveal their third album, Bānhūs via Hobbledehoy Records on 4 October 2013. The next moody volume from the triple guitar wielding Goliath will be accompanied by some very welcome, long-awaited tour dates.

Bānhūs is an Old English word meaning ‘body’, literally translating as ‘bone-house’. The album’s title and lyrical themes of existence, misery and death are captured in sonic form across seven songs of despair that feature both Eleventh’s most introspective material to date, and its hardest-hitting. Three years were spent writing the album, and a year was spent in the studio using techniques never before adopted by the band. Bānhūs is Eleventh He Reaches London’s most ambitious work yet.

This is not ‘safe indie music’ or ‘blissed out psych’. Bānhūs is raw, organic, intricately detailed and layered with melody. This is a band that has shared stages with acts as diverse as The Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, ISIS, Cult Of Luna, Against Me!, Boris and Les Savy Fav, and garnered several nods from WA’s illustrious WAMI Awards. Bānhūs will be a gift to eager old fans, and a fascinating ride for unwitting new ones.
