Caspian Announces New Studio Album Dust and Disquiet Due out September 25th

Caspian Announces New Studio Album Dust & Disquiet Due out September 25th

Beverly, MA atmospheric rock band Caspian is thrilled to announce Dust & Disquiet, a brand new studio LP which is set for release on September 25th, 2015 via HobbledehoyDust & Disquiet is the band’s fourth full-length album and the follow up to 2012’s stellar Waking Season.  Recorded at Q Division Studios in Somerville, Massachusetts, Caspian once again tapped Matt Bayles (Isis, Cursive, Screaming Females, The Sword) to produce and mix.

On Dust & Disquiet, Caspian again refuses to be confined by genre.  Listeners will find those familiar intricately textured soundscapes that the band has become known for on tracks like “Sad Heart of Mine,” “Arcs of Command” and the title track, “Dust & Disquiet.” In the center of the album, a track like “Run Dry” will surprise listeners and stands alone in the band’s discography as a stark, acoustic ballad with vocals from guitarist Calvin Joss at the forefront.  Elsewhere, Caspian forays into unexpected territory: “Ríoseco” explores the wilder, steel-eyed side of country, and “Aeternum Vale” ventures into the classical realm.

Caspian released their last LP, Waking Season, in 2012 to critical acclaim, with Spin proclaiming it as the “Best Post Rock Album of 2012.”  The band followed with the release of Hymn For the Greatest Generation in the fall of 2013, an EP that was to serve as Caspian’s epilogue to Waking Season.  Hymn for the Greatest Generation was also well received, finding praise everywhere from Pitchfork to Nylon to Alternative Press.  After touring extensively in support of those releases (tallying hundreds of shows throughout 25 countries), Caspian returned to their hometown of Beverly to celebrate a decade of making music together at the historic Larcom Theatre last October.

The band is excited to release new music and get back out on the road.  Dust and Disquiet is due out on September 25th, 2015 via Hobbledehoy and will be available for preorder on 2LP / MP3 at

New 7″/Digital from The Leap Year out now

New 7″/Digital from The Leap Year out now

This is a very short production run release; individually numbered, hand-stamped and screen-printed. A snapshot of a band with a history that goes right back to the first years of this label.

“This band was formed on the basis that we have fun. The songs were to be written quickly and without fuss. They were also to be honest and engaging but without being too tricky and musically complex. With this in mind, we on many levels have failed. There were times where it hasn’t been fun. Some of songs have been laboured and maybe some of them haven’t hit the mark. So, with this in mind, we welcome you to discover our new 7″. It was written quickly, recorded in 8 hours and the band had a lot of fun recording it. We hope you like it too.”

Owen Australian shows 2015

Mike Kinsella has spent nearly his entire life (give or take those first 12 years or so) playing with some of the most influential bands of the last couple decades. Indeed, an entire generation of musicians is indebted to his time in groups including Cap’n Jazz, American Football, and Owls.

After each of those bands dissolved for one reason or another, Kinsella took to recording under the pseudonym Owen and has slowly and steadily built up a solid catalog of releases under this solo project. Four of the Eight studio albums of the Owen collection have had local released on Australia’s own Hobbledehoy Records who are part of the team to bring the fans the first ever Owen shows in Australia. Kinsella will be delving into his back catalogue that stretches almost a decade and a half and completes with his latest offering of Other People Songs. Both Sydney and Melbourne will be treated to stand alone shows this July, do not miss this historic event.

Welcoming Luke Howard – Pre-order Two & One LP now

Welcoming Luke Howard – Pre-order Two & One LP now

Stream / Pre-order here
Pre-order comes with instant download (MP3 or FLAC)

Luke Howard is a composer and pianist from Melbourne who writes hauntingly blissful music, evoking a strong cinematic feeling by telling a story (sometimes, a very sad story…)

“Recorded across Melbourne and Reykjavik, Two & One soundtracks first and foremost Howard’s travels through Australia, Europe and North America. The narrative flows with a variety of compositional styles and instruments, with new moods and voices beyond the piano. Artifacts of human presence are strewn throughout, from calm breathing and the plod of piano keys and creak of stool, to undefinable background noises that unsettle. Such details reduce us to mere stowaways on someone else’s journey – but the wayfarer suffers us with a quiet majesty. His true companion is that on which he records his experiences. Most settle for a journal, a sketchpad, a camera; in Howard’s case, we are fortunate indeed that he also had a piano to return home to.” (Chris Redfearn)

Self-released as a photo book / audio download, Hobbledehoy are proud to share this modern-composition diary of sorts with you on beautiful vinyl format.

2014: A year in review

2014: A year in review

I’m going to try to keep things brief here… A LOT HAPPENED THIS YEAR.

Most notably, Hobbledehoy became forever stronger with my wife Erin taking an active role in the label. Many of the artists were kicking goals well beyond anything any of us imagined. From a label standpoint…

  • 7 records were released, all with vinyl editions. This included two fancy pants 2LP gatefolds (and our MOST EXPENSIVE project yet).
  • CASPIAN and KEVIN DEVINE joined our little family.
  • For the regulars, we created a Record Club.
  • I finally bit the bullet and got a Hobbledehoy tattoo. On the same day, a few other misguided souls thought it to be a good idea too.
  • We ran our first annual “Hobble Day” celebrations in Brisbane. Next year’s will be announced shortly…
  • We made a coffee roast with our new pals at Monastery, had a fantastic launch party with Kevin Devine performing. Coffee is long gone now, but we’ll have a new roast for you next year.
  • Our website has been under heavy redevelopment, and while still early days, is more user friendly and enjoyable to use.

So once again, thank YOU.

Hobbledehoy x Monastery Coffee collaboration

coffeebag- fullsize

Hobbledehoy x Monastery Coffee collaboration

Introducing the first Monastery Coffee x Hobbledehoy collaboration; Deri Kocha – an unusual, sweet, Ethiopian bean ideal for espresso or filter methods (we recommend Aeropress!). After a long cupping process, Erin and I, together with Adam from Monastery, finally nailed this one down and we’re all really excited for you to try it!

Monastery are a local team based alongside us here in Adelaide. A small batch, specialty coffee roaster, that share our philosophy of putting the artist/producer at the center of how we do things. This very same ethos ensures Monastery’s quality, while also respecting the people involved at every stage from planting to production.

You can order the beans from our online store now, they will be shipping from NOV 5 onward. We also have new Hobbledehoy mugs in store ideal for all hot beverages, and a combo package for both to save on shipping.

We’ll be announcing a special launch party in Adelaide in a few days time too. OOOOOH IT’S GOING TO BE GOOOOOOOOD!
